Some people just "get it”. The first time I heard "I’m Alive”, Kenny Chesney’s duet with Dave Matthews, I thought, "That guy gets it!”
So damn easy to say that life's so hard
Everybody's got their share of battle scars
As for me I'd like to thank my lucky stars that
I'm alive and well
I count my blessings before I count battle scars. After I go through tough times (and even when I’m in them), I try to see the good things happening and believe in God’s path for me. And how could I not? My cup is full.
My family is healthy, I have wonderful friends and I have an abundance of life’s "comforts”.
As Kenny says ….
It'd be easy to add up all the pain
And all the dreams you've sat and watch go up in flames
Dwell on the wreckage as it smolders in the rain
But not me... I'm alive
I’m around people with cancer every day and, more often than not, they find joy in the darkest of times. I was just talking with the Mom of one of our clients, Stevie, and Angel’s attitude stopped me in my tracks. Stevie had a rough go of treatment this week and her family was supposed to shoot a video with us, but Stevie was too sick. And there’s Angel on the phone, just leaving the hospital after an unexpected three-day stay and she’s saying to me, "We’re so excited to be a part of your video. We’re honored you asked us!” WHAT? I’m afraid if that was me, I’d be like, "Listen lady, I just watched my child struggle, for three days, through a treatment that I wouldn’t wish on anyone and I’m exhausted – bug off!” Not Angel. She gets it, like Kenny.
And today you know that's good enough for me
Breathing in and out's a blessing can't you see
Today's the first day of the rest of my life
And I'm alive and well
I'm alive and well
This morning I was blaring "I’m Alive” on my way to work. I checked to see if the words were on the cd jacket. I found something even better! Kenny Chesney is describing how the song came to be.
He wrote, "The song was born in a boat …. When my captain Ben woke up… I asked him if he was alright and he said, "I’m Alive….” We wrote the whole song in about twenty minutes --- because, you know, we all go through things that alter our lives, but we get through them … I knew right then, that at a point, I was going to be okay. I didn’t know when. But I knew I was healthy; I had great friends. There were a lot of people who loved me and a lot of truth left to live. I was alive, and that was a great place to start from….”
I played this song for my Mom during a recent visit. (One of my struggles is not having enough time with my family. They live across the country!) She fell in love with it and soon announced, via Facebook, it’s her new favorite! I hope you like it too!
